Over the years I have been a practitioner of Project Management. It is a fascinating discipline as it too has the elements of Art and Science - there is structure, process and discipline in the framework, but the reality is projects are delivered with and through people - the human dimension. In addition, Project Management is about results aligned to strategies and goals, it is about bringing concepts and ideas (the intangible) into products and services (the tangible).
Through a variety of facilitation services I assist organizations in creating better quality projects and better quality results. Although there are best practices and standards associated with Project Management, their implementation must be adapted to the culture, structure, level of maturity and strategies of any organization. Outlined below is a diagram of the process, and areas of service provided, followed by detailed descriptions of each.
The PSIENCE Framework is a holistic, integrated framework designed to improve the probability of project success. It aligns business strategy with people, processes and projects.
Whether you need to establish a Project Office for the enterprise or for a large initiative, or evolve your current one, I will perform an assessment and provide recommendations to get you on the right track.
In order to successfully align projects to strategy, you need to manage your portfolio and where you have invested your resources - both financial and people. Are you working on the right things at the right time?
A suite of templates does not guarantee project success. It is the quality and connectivity within the templates and their utilization that creates success for projects and organizations. Clients have access to the PSIENCE suite of effective standards and templates.
The following are facilitated project services sessions conducted with appropriate stakeholders to develop the project documentation required to manage and track projects through a successful implementation:
Facilitated session to clearly define the problem and/or opportunity and the associated conceptual product for project initiation.
Facilitated session to determine if the potential project is in alignment with business strategy and other management drivers; to determine readiness to proceed; and identify potential constraints. The session addresses business, technical delivery, resource and financial alignment (value).
Facilitated session to drive out the conceptual solution elements and potential alternatives. The deliverable is a documented product scope (what is to be delivered) used to develop the Project Statement (charter).
Facilitated session to develop the Project Statement. The deliverable is a documented project scope (the how much, by when) which is the approval document for a project to proceed.
Facilitated session to identify all stakeholders impacted by the project and development of a communication and engagement plan.
Facilitated session to develop and document the initial risk log. Business risks, Technical risks (Product, Service, Support) and Project risks are covered to create a comprehensive risk baseline.
Facilitated sessions to document lessons learned - both strengths and areas to improve. Key factors are identified to facilitate continuous improvement. For large projects it is recommended that these be conducted at each major phase of the project.
Facilitated session to provide the final project deliverable. Final measurements against baseline are reviewed and recommendations for future projects and/or operational initiatives are identified.
The following independent reviews are available:
Using survey and interview techniques, an independent summary of the satisfaction with a project is provided. Identification of areas to improve and critical success factors is captured to input to a project knowledge bank for continuous improvement.
A review at any stage of a project that provides a scorecard across a number of dimensions and rating of probability of success. Includes recommendations on how to improve the project.
Where a more detailed, in depth assessment is required to determine if a project should continue to proceed, a project audit is available.
An independent review of project documentation is conducted and a report provided indicating areas for improvement to support successful projects.
