The Art & Science of Leadership

Today's complex business environments require strong leadership skills. Are you ready to explore, discover, create and evolve your leadership skills? Are you looking for ways to create higher employee engagement and retention, more creative and innovative work environments and more effective and efficient decision making? Through a facilitated, interactive approach together we can:

Identify Blind Spots...through observation and conversation together we will identify leadership 'blind spots'. Typically we will set up a day to shadow you during your normal course of work and various meetings and engagement with staff. From this observation we will review together what is working well for you and areas that need improvement.

Prioritize the Focus...utilizing a risk based assessment and sequencing approach we will prioritize together the leadership skills you would like to develop and enhance.

Develop an Action Plan...we will then develop a customized action plan to work on enhancing these skill sets.

Develop an Accountability Structure...we will also develop an accountability structure to support and sustain the new skills and behaviours.

Areas of Focus

The following are potential topics or areas to focus on:

Creating and Communicating a Shared Vision...any great undertaking requires a vision that everyone understands, buys into and acts to achieve. In addition, the vision must be effectively communicated at all levels throughout the organization. Visions are not just intellectual words, visions must have meaning and appeal to the emotions and creative intelligence of people. Effective communication of a vision is when it translates to "What does it to mean to me as an individual and how can I contribute to the larger objective?"

Strategic Planning...most organizations and leaders are great at creating a strategic plan, but often the implementation falls short...or in employee vernacular "the implementation sucks". Learn how to establish engagement throughout the organization, create sustainable momentum to achieve goals and targets, and monitor and finetune progress as the plan is implemented.

Managing Change...the one constant in life and business is change. Is there a way to better manage change? How can you engage team members in the change process? Learn behaviours and communication skills that can support teams in embracing change and choosing transformation over status quo.

Effective & Efficient Decision Making...does your leadership team struggle in achieving consensus? Is there perpetual conflict with a lack of commitment to implementing the decisions? How do you make decisions when things change so quickly that new information always becomes available? Learn how to be more efficient and effective in decision making.

Creating Environments for Innovation and Creativity...are you creating an environment that allows for the wisdom of the organization to come forward? Learn how to create environments that are empowering and unleash the talent within.

High Performance Teams...are your teams good or great? Learn how to get a team to 'gel' quickly and produce quality results quicker.

Building Trust...trust is a foundational leadership skill. Do your teams trust you? Learn how to build trust early in relationships and sustain it over time.

Personal Mastery...Excuse me, your character is showing..." How often are your behaviours and actions incongruent with what you are asking your employees to do? Are you a good model for your staff? Are you in integrity with your values and beliefs and that of the organization?

Engagement Model

The initial engagement is on site shadowing, observation and conversation. From this session, the areas of focus are identified and using a risk based assessment and sequencing process are prioritized. A custom action plan and accountability structure is designed to address the highest priority areas of focus. This action plan may consist of various forms of interaction, including but not limited to facilitated sessions, check-in meetings and assignments.

Expectations

What you can expect of me

Respect for Your Time...I understand that by the nature of your work that you have a busy schedule. I respect your time and will use our time together in an efficient manner. Due to my intuitive nature, I quickly get you, your situation and what is happening in your organization. From the start of the engagement I am in value creation mode and being productive.

Relevant...if I do not have the relevant background and experience to support you, I will identify that as quickly as possible and refer you to my network for a more suitable facilitator.

Reality Based...I am a pragmatic facilitator and strongly rooted in reality and practicality. I do believe that concepts and theory are of value, but often they need to be adapted and customized to truly create results. There is no one size fits all - we are unique and situations are unique. If something is not working for you we will try other approaches.

What do I expect of you?

Commitment...I need you to commit to the process and participation in the action plan. If a desire to change is not one of your top priorities (and you should probably have no more than three priorities), then you will not achieve the value you are seeking.

A Willingness to Experiment...often the same old things just don't work anymore and it is time to try something new. You need to be willing to try some new things and experiment with new skills, and be prepared to be more vulnerable than ever before. There will be a safety net during this process.

Be Open to Feedback...criticism is hard to take, but I find there is often a grain of truth and a growth opportunity within it. My intention is to always provide feedback in a constructive manner, but sometimes the message isn't heard unless it is blunt and said in a straightforward fashion. Being respectful of your time, I don't want to waste time being politically correct. Often it is better to deal with the 'elephant in the room' then to let it continue to take up space.
